An Eshani Karu MD CompanyDR ESHANI KARU MD - July 31, 2021 - Covid-19 and Landlords
Yesterday the United States blanket rental moratorium that had been in place in one form or another since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic ended today, July 31, 2021, when the U.S. Senate failed to reach an agreement of extending the renters. For those of us living in California, Governor Newsom extended the renters moratorium in conjunction with the California Senate and Assembly by extending the renters moratorium in until September 30, 2021 and it is possible that there will be further extensions thereafter in California. As we know eviction, moving are all causes of tremendous stress. Please beware of any member of your household that becomes increasing stressed in the next few weeks or months, beyond their norm. My office will help you find the appropriate help when needed.
DR ESHANI KARU MD - Update July 7, 2021 - Covid-19 - Deaths Skew to People Older than 40
I wrote on my blog at dreshaniniranyakarumd.com today about deaths by age from Covid-19. In the posting I mentioned that 64.7% of all Covid-19 death patients were aged 55 and older. If we add the death rate for 40 to 49 (18,534) and 45 to 54 (30,428), the percentage of deaths when measured against the total deaths by Covid-19 as 596,740 as of July 7, 2021 - the percentage of deaths from age 40 and older is arrived at by dividing the total deaths 40 and above, which is 435,193 by the total deaths of 596,740, which is 72.92%.
I will detail the very low number for children dying from Covid-19 on my blog https://dreshanikaru.com/.
DR ESHANI KARU MD - Update June 22, 2021 - Covid-19 - California Is Now Open
It's great to be in California today as we are moving freely around outdoors without masks, social distancing and we can visit from county to county without worrying about whether or not we are in violation of a county mandate about our actions related to Covid-19. We are still wearing our masks when seeing patients and at least half of my patients are wearing masks, but we are making progress and the lifting of the Stay at Home Order last week was a major step.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update June 9, 2021 - Vaccinations are Working
If you haven't been vaccinated for Covid-19, it is time to do so. The evidence is confirmed that the vaccines are giving people the protection we have all sought. California department of health is saying that people who have been vaccinated can resume more activities without having to follow masking restrictions and the normal social distancing that we have been doing for more than a year now. If you haven't already done so, please get vaccinated.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update May 25, 2021 - Opening Day is Coming
On June 15, 2021 the citizens of California are being released from their stay at home restrictions to having the ability to walk around freely, without wearing a mask and to again enjoy the company of others without a numerical restriction in place. The ability to go to a restaurant will once again be in fashion and if there are eateries that will provide open bars and exotic buffets of even fruits and vegetables, they will be able to operate without fear of being fined and shut down.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update May 13, 2021 - 12 to 15 OK for Vaccine
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced today that it is giving the go ahead for the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to be administered to twelve year old adolescents and for our teenagers aged thirteen to fifteen. You will recall that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention gave the go ahead for teenagers sixteen and seventeen to get the COVID-19 vaccine last December 2020. There were a total of fourteen committee members that made the recommendation with one member recusing themselves from voting. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director Rochelle Walensky made the official sign off on the recommendation Wednesday night, May 12, 2021.
There are an estimated seventeen million young people between the ages of twelve and fifteen in the United States. If we are able to get them to be vaccinated, it will go a long way towards getting our school systems operating back to normal after school year 2020 - 2021 has been very much disrupted.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update April 25, 2021 - Masking Continues
Many of you have been asking me why it is necessary to wear a mask and keep washing your hands when so many people around you have been vaccinated with the Covid-19 vaccine. The answer is turning out to be very clear - because it is working to keep the infection rate and protect those that have not yet received their vaccine. There have been cities that have had lockdowns and cities that have not restricted people from leaving their homes, but in all circumstances, the infection rates are lower when people continue to wear their masks than when they don't. So let's keep wearing our masks and washing our hands and keep the infectious rate down.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update April 6, 2021 - Time for Vaccinations
The news from Israel this week is very encouraging for those people who have not yet gotten vaccinated. Not only is vaccination good for the individual, the news from Israeli researchers is showing that vaccinations are also helping the people living around the Vaccinated building towards a herd immunity. While it was only 223 communities researched the news is good and those adults with the opportunity of getting vaccinated are courage to do so.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update March 1, 2021 - Covid-19 Vaccine by Pfizer is Good
Hello America. The news coming from England, Israel and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Washington, D.C. is that vaccinations for the Covid-19 are very very effective. 92% effectiveness whether it is the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine is going to prevent one from getting hospitalized for Covid-19 and it is just possible that vaccinated individuals will not pass on the Covid-19 as well. It is too early to tell whether or not there will be vaccine immunity in its totality, but the news is good. So go get vaccinated when you have the opportunity.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update February 13, 2021 - Covid-19 California Drive Through Vaccine Update
So I had a patient tell me about their experience getting their first vaccine shot at the Pomona County Fair Grounds this past week. They had gone online to the California website and typed in their name and zip code and answered a several questions concerning their age, health, previous health conditions and their last week, all questions to determine whether or not they were experiencing Covid-19 symptoms. They answered truthfully and then they were given a date to drive and get their first vaccine AND second vaccine. They pulled into the parking lot and ran through a maze of orange colored cones and then showed their I.D. and were sent to a second station where the vaccine was administered while he was in the driver's seat. He then drove to another line of cars and waited 15 minutes to see if he would have a reaction to the vaccine. He had none and off he went until 3 weeks hence to get his 2nd Pfizer vaccine.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update January 31, 2021 - Covid-19 Vaccine Update
There are over 62 countries throughout the world that are engaged in giving the Covid-19 vaccinations to their populations in the hopes to create a "herd immunity" that will render the pandemic over. The question that is asked frequently is, "When will life return to normal. It is the subject of a great debate without an easy answer, even from the experts in the field. While the vaccines available appear to be 95% effective, some experts claim that it will take a minimum of 70% of the entire world population to take the vaccines to create total immunity. Currently there are 4.52 million vaccines being given a day and at that rate it will take several years to come anywhere near that percent to make it safe to travel the world without a chance of catching Covid-19.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update January 16, 2021 - Get Your Covid-19 Vaccine
The COVID-19 vaccine is upon us and at my other website I have introuced the vaccine basic information that the CDC and the US FDA believe that the vaccine will prevent us from getting COVID-19 and if we do get COVID-19 we are less likely to have a serious illness from it. There have been many people who have had COVID-19 and some people have had it knock them down hard and taken a lot of time to recover; others, it has been flu like systems that have lingered for a long time and then there are variations of symptoms in between. However, the CDC and the US FDA have strongly suggested that it is much to our benefit to get the vaccine and protect ourselves.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update December 20, 2020 - Debbie is Not a Downer on Covid-19 Christmas
It is the holiday season and friends have been calling and sharing their experiences of the Covid-19 season. It almost doesn't seem real that there are parking lots packed full of cars and our civic leaders are telling us to stay home, avoid crowds, emergency rooms are full and there is no more space at the ICU if we continue to catch the virus. What do we do when our loved ones say - stay away - you tell me what you are doing and you have frightened me to the point where you scare me, stay away, don't come near me today - wait 5 days until there are no symptoms. It is a 14 day quarantine, but the symptoms usually appear in 5. I love you and I'll risk the 9 days after 5, but stay away from me for 5 days and make sure that you do not have any symptoms. The virus is real. We have to be safe!
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid Update December 6, 2020 - Lockdown!
The state of California knows that staying inside is a difficult situation during a stay inside lockdown order. They do not want us to deteriorate either physically or emotionally. The following public places are noted for our well being:
- California Outdoor recreational facilities will allow us to go outside for the purpose of facilitating physically distanced personal health and wellness through outdoor exercise
- California Retail stores are allowed at 20% occupancy with special hours designated for seniors and people with compromised immune systems.
- California Shopping centers are allowed to be open at 20% too.
- California restaurants are take out only.
- California offices are to work at home unless absolutely cannot work from home.
- Churches and temples are allowed to worship outdoors only.
- Entertainment production is allowed to continue without live audiences.
ESHANI KARU MD - Update November 15, 2020 - Covid-19 Thanksgiving 2020
Thanksgiving is next week and everyone I know is making phone calls to see what they can do, what they want to do and eventually to decide what they will do. The news across the country is that the number of people infected with Covid-19 and the number of people dying from the disease is growing. The Los Angles Times ran an article stating that over 1 Million corona cases have occurred in Texas. People are gathering in numbers greater than 10 and many people are going without wearing a mask or face covering. People are fatigued of the virus and many have taken the stance that they will not live in fear and stop living their life.
I heard from a friend in Illinois that their mother "may have had" a case of Covid-19. Their mother had a serious case of the flu, but she never went to the doctor and was never tested for Covid-19, so that cannot say that she definitely had it. However, her son was testing for Covid-19 and while he did not have a bought of Covid-19, he is a carrier, he is asymptomatic. This is why we social distance and wear a mask. Asymptomatic individuals are all around us in the community. One does not necessarily catch Covid-19 from a "sick coughing person". Many serious cases of Covid-19 occur because of contact with an asymptomatic person.
People will do what they will do, but you as an individual must protect yourself. Please wear a mask over your mouth and nose and keep six feet apart of the people you meet who live outside your household.
ESHANI KARU MD - Update November 5, 2020 - Vitamin B3 (Niacin)
There have been a few beauty questions posed to me about Vitamin B and its possible effects on skin. In truth Vitamin B3, which is also known as niacin, is very important to help keep our skin healthy, as well as keeping our maintining healthy body function. One interesting fact about vitamin b3 is that it is water soluble our body does not store B3 and so we need to eat food that provides it. It is found in meat and poultry, but for our vegetarian eaters they will get it from brown rice, corn on the cob, quinoa and whole wheat foods. You'll want to read the labels to make sure your whole wheat bread has vitamin B and vitamin B3. I've addressed and talked a little about B3 as it relates to healthy skin, but it's important to eat a balanced diet and get all the essential vitamins for life, including Vitamin B and B3. You want to treat your entire body and think of food individual vitamin by vitamin. Still, it's important to know that the vitamins play an important role in our overall beauty.
Dr ESHANI KARU MD - Covid-19: Update November 2, 2020 - Covid and the Beauty Industry
The beauty industry has been hit hard by Covid with beauty sales down as people have not been leaving their house or wearing a mask has caused people to not be as concerned going outside and the companies have responded by retooling their equipment or changing their manufacturing to produce hand sanitizers and cleaning wipes. Yet, they have not forgotten that we are in the beauty business and an industry that does $500 Billion dollars in sales and keeps a lot of people employed - we need to survive and help the industry thrive.
The beauty industry think tanks have been crunching number and interviewing the executives of major cosmetic companies and they are estimating that the industry revenue may fall by as much as 30 percent once the final numbers come in for 2020. This is not as bad as it could be, but the beauty industry and the contract manufacturing in Southern California for the beauty industry has declined in 2020. That said, let us look at the postive side and that is we still care about our beauty and the industry is not going to disappear.
ESHANI KARU MD - Covid-19: Update October 17, 2020 - Baldwin Park Kaiser Permanente Good News
Have you heard the news that taking precautions to avoid Covid-19 is actually working? For real I have a friend that needed to get to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Baldwin Park, California on Friday, 16 October 2020 to have an evaluation for a medical condition in the digestive tract that had been troublesome for almost a month. The visit was about an hour in duration, a diagnosis made, prescriptions ordered and a senior flu shot and tetenus shot was administered. The nurse giving the shots was in a jovial mood and considering the location my friend was curious as to what was giving the nurse so much pleasure. It turns out she was extremely happy and proud of her colleagues at work. She had learned that the hospital had an employee Covid-19 rate of 0.2% (zero point two percent) against the norm percentage of 1.2%. It just goes to show what washing your hands, wearing a mask, taking your temperature, staying home when you are sneezing, have a temperature and take caution not to infect peope even if it means siding on side of caution.
October 8, 2020 Beauty and the SunSo it seems that the sun screen commercials have been too effective for those that are adventurous enough to go outside and for those of you who are not leaving the house because of Covid-19, you must be sure that you are not becoming or have become Vitamin D deficient.
Vitamin D only takes 10 minutes a day to get enough to keep you topped up with Vitamin D. Are you getting those 10 minutes, one hour a week of Vitamin D time? Many of you are not and it is important to your bones and your skin. There are clinical studies that have show skin conditions are worsened when there is a deficiency of Vitamin D in your body. It is not difficult to get - walk outside for 10 minutes a day in the sun and do not let the Covid-19 scare you into thinking that you will catch it simply by walking outside. Wear a mask and social distance if you can walk. If you don't want to walk, put a chair outside in the sun for 10 minutes and listen to your phone play tunes or listen to a YouTube lecture.
September 20, 2020 Acne TipsA mother wrote me not too long ago to ask about acne. I thought I'd pass some general knowledge on the subject on this website. Generally acne falls into a few categories: mild, moderate and severe. For mild or moderate acne conditions one can seek an over the counter remedy at the local pharmacy and often times this will be helpful and keep the acne condition in check. One is usually trying to keep the acne condition in check, reduce the number of breakouts or even limit acne scaring. In the case of severe acne one will want to seek out a medical doctor to discuss the situation and find a possible medication that will be of benefit. General rules of thumb in daily care of acne are as follows:
- Twice a day wash your face using a mild soap, warm water and never scrub your face.
- Never pop your pimples
- Keep your hair off your face
- Stay away from oil based makeup and hair products that are greasy
- Please wear your Covid-19 mask and social distance,
Back to School Makeup Tips - September 4, 2020So it's back to school time, but for most of you there is no school to attend during this pandemic time of the year. So what do we need to be aware of during this time. Well first of all we need to make sure we take care of our skin and make sure that it is clean. For those of you with oily skin conditions and prone to pimples, you want to make sure you do not POP those pimples. You want to go light on the make up and do not CAKE it on. You want to use conditioner on your hair and clean your brushes and while thinking of brushes, you want to make sure that you brush your teeth as well. Most importantly, keep a smile on your face and enjoy the day. The old saying goes that it takes less muscles to smile than to frown.
End of Your Summer 2020 Makeup Tips - August 22, 2020We are coming up to the end of Summer in the month and date of August 2020 and the Covid-19 pandemic is not letting up, as it relates to a walk in the park, swim in the ocean and day at the beach. It's good to be outdoors and able to take in the beautiful sites of our country. Summer brings us fun and it brings us hot days and humid nights and just plain wet and dry heat depending upon where we live, but we've got some beauty tips for everyone to follow. No matter how hot it gets or even cools, we need to have a great moisurizer for our skin. Oil free moisurizers is our choice and one that has UV protection is even better. If you've got the budget, using a good primer will assist in keep the makeup on your face just a bit longer. In the summer heat it's best to use a cream blush, rather than a powder because of the wind and dust. And when it comes to foundation, don't go with a heavy hand, don't lay it on thick. Enjoy your day and remember that you look and feel beautiful because you are beautiful.
Hot Sunny Day Beauty Tip - August 9, 2020It's going to be hot and dry or it's going to be hot and muggy and either way it's hot and we need to take care of our skin. Caring for our skin is as important as the makeup we apply on our face. You want to choose a moisturizer that will hydrate your skin so that it is really truly protected from the skin and it's UV rays. You do not want to be putting your makeup on over sunburned skin. That's a nasty job. So let's make sure that we have a great moisturizer and are well hydrated. We also want to use a good sunscreen and you might consider applying it every two hours of the day when in the sunlight. That's the tip of the day - moisturize and sunscreen and whenever possible - stay out of the sun on hot heavy UV light days.
Hiding Wrinkles Beauty Tip - July 25, 2020It is time to talk to my friends who are concerned about their wrinkles. You've lived past the age of puberty, you have lived life to its fullest and now you want to hide a little of your youthful adventures - smoking, drinking and a little too much party in the sunshine without worrying about the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Well let's here what the experts have to say about it. Number One they tell us that with age our skin becomes drier, which will cause your wrinkles to stand out even more than they really do. You want to make the skin plump up by using a moisturizer, especially one that contains hyaluronic acid. The Hyaluronic Acid pulls in water for the skin, which acts as the plumper that fills the lines of the face making the skin smoother and the wrinkles to disappear.
Teenage Beauty Tip - July 10, 2020One of the main concerns of teenage girls that visit Eshani Karu, MD is that of oily skin, breakout acne and sometimes painful blackheads. Teenage girls oftentimes have oil glands that are enlarged, which makes for large facial pores, oil skin and the blackheads. At the same time every teenage girl is potentially different and what tip works for you may not work for your best friends. There are a few tips that the leading dermatologists have recommended:
Using a daily foam or gel cleaner may do the trick for oily skin. If you happen to be wearing makeup during the day, it's a recommended 3 step process for cleaning your skin at night - take your eye make up off first, then wash your hands (fingertips) and then apply the face cleaner. It is really important to clean your face by taking off all your makeup before going to sleep. No matter how much it seems to be a "pain" at the time, it is important to go to sleep with clean face devoid dirt, oil and makeup.
Beauty Tip - July 5, 2020 - A few female teenage patients of Eshani Karu MD have asked her about sharing their make with friends when they get together. Dr. Eshani Karu stressed that we all should be practicing social distancing, wear a mask and wash our hands frequently and that this wasn't the time to be sharing their lipstick, mascara and other beauty items. However, it is safe to use your own makeup products, but you must wash your hands before using them because you will often times put makeup on your nose, near the mouth and eyes. If you get the virus, you don't have to throw your makeup out with the trash; you can still use your makeup, but do not give to your friends to use.

Hyaluronic Acid: Hyaluronic acid is a very popular ingredient in today's formulations. This ingredient has demonstrated an ability to improve elasticity, which smoothing fine lines, firming the skin appearance within a seven to nine week period and it is relatively inexpensive to add to a product.
Vitamin C: Vitamin C has been in our one a day's since we were children, but it is also one of the best antioxidant ingredients for skin care. This antioxidant helps us deal with environmental toxins and during the summer will help us keep our skin tone. Vitamin C has a great capacity to acts as a combater of free-radical skin damage.
Zinc Oxide: Do you remember walking on the beach and seeing the summer lifeguards painted white noses? Zinc Oxide is a great protector of the ultra violet rays of the sun that beat down on us on hot summer days. It is important to have UV protection when we are outdoors to protect our skin from sunburn and dehydration.

Resveratrol Peptide Cream - Our First ProductResveratrol Peptide Cream is the first product that we are introducing to our clients. This product has a potent blend of peptides that are designed to help resist the signs of aging, reduce the look of fine lines and wrikles, as well as provide greater stretch and elastic qualities to the skin while supporting our skin's collagen to have it visibly tighen and over the course of weeks and months firm our skin.
What is Resveratrol? It is a strong powerful plant extract that is taken from red grapes and is an excellent antioxidant that helps our skin and protects it from oxidative damage caused by the sun and other oxidative causes.
How does Resveratrol work? Resveratrol, scientifically known as 3,5,4'-trihydroxy-trans-stilbene, is a protectorant of our cell's DNA. As stated before it is a very strong and powerfully, excellent antioxidant. Nature's antioxidants have been known to act as an assistant preventing our cells from damage due to free radicals. You have heard the term free radicals often when antioxidants are mentioned because the free radicals are damaging because they are unstable atoms (they have more protons than neutrons) caused by air pollution, sunlight and our bodies naturally generate free radicals when using calories, which in effect burn fat cells that can have deleterious effects on our human body.

Telomeres are natures shoelace cap to DNA being visually likened to shoelaces. As our shoelaces become flayed, our DNA ages. The telomeres prevent the DNA strands from accelerating too fast and the slower it takes for telomeres to come undone - unravel, the younger we look.

(Before I begin watching my figure, I have to put my "fat eyes" away. For beauty it is "my judgment eyes".)
My Beautiful Human SkinFor most of us when we went to school, we were taught that the skin is composed of three layers of skin: epidermis, the dermis and hypodermis. We thought of it as top, middle and bottom and then we went on to the next question about skin that our teachers gave us. Well it is true that we have those three layers of skin, but there is so much more to our skin than those three words and if we want to find our Beautiful Skin, I believe we need to know a little bit more about it.
It is often said that our skin is the largest organ in our body, but what is the definition of an organ? As a body organ our skin is there to protect us as a barrier from outside sources like ultraviolet light from the sun, dirt, solvents, radiation, chemicals and micro-organisms. Our skin is also a temperature regulator keeping us safe from the extremes of hot and cold with sweat, and also plays a role in our peripheral circulation and fluids, again with sweat. It is also very important in acting as a reservoir for holding our Vitamin D, which is critical for our bones and the absorption of calcium and phosphorus, as well as support for our immune system. I don't know about you, but I'm not thinking about all this when looking in the mirror and finding My Beautiful Skin, but we start here so that we know how important the choices we make when deciding which beauty products to put on to our Beautiful Face.
For one moment allow me to talk a little bit technically about our skin. Each layer of our skin has an important role to play and it isn't as simple as top, middle and bottom. Our skin is made up of tissues, cells, multiple components, working together with a single mindedness, to protect us. The deepest layer (the bottom) has many many blood vessels, as well as sensory fibers, autonomic and sympathetic nerve fibers that are tied to our brains that allow us to have communication with our brain. Our skin and brain are in communication.
Our skin has been designed to resist chemicals and protect us. Update Covid-19: 21 October 2020 - Hello Dr Eshani Karu - Do You Like Numbers?Covid-19 numbers are in the news Dr Eshani Karu every single day. Turn on Dr Eshani Karu radio, Dr Eshani Karu television and it will be broadcast with 24 to 48 hours. Dr Eshani Karu Covid-19 results will be there followed by the numbers for California, New York and Pennsylvania. It will then be broadcast for the small towns surrounding Dr Eshani Karu and then you be the one sitting in front of the television like a deer being caught in the headlamps on a night in Dr Eshani Karu - dumb struck as to what it all means.
Let's look at the numbers Dr Eshani Karu. According to the Center for Disease Control for the Dr Eshani Karu week of October 18, 2020 there were 18,593,656 cases of Covid-19 in the United States. In the same Dr Eshani Karu breath there were 605,168 confirmed deaths as the result of Covid-19. So what do these numbers mean for you and me.
Let's do the math Dr Eshani Karu. Dr Eshani Karu there are 328,200,000 million people living in the United States. 18,595,656 confirmed cases and so if we divide the 18 million by the 328 million numbers above Dr Eshani Karu, we get 18,595,656 divided by 328,200,000 equal to .0566 or 5.66% chance of getting Covid-19. If you get Covid-19 Dr Eshani Karu, there is what percent chance of dying? Divide 605,168 by 18,595,656 Dr Eshani Karu and the chance of dying once getting Covid-19 is .0325 or 3.25%.
So Dr Eshani Karu, we put all these numbers together to determine the odds of catching and dying of Covid-19 as of the week of October 18 and the answer is found by multiplying 3.25% (the chance of dying Dr Eshani Karu) and 5.66% (the odds on catching Covid-19 Dr Eshani Karu) - and the answer is .0018 or 0.18% chance of catching and dying of Covid-19.
It becomes clear Dr Eshani Karu that the chances that Covid-19 will be fatal for most of the population is very minor. Of course any percentage is too much and for our Dr Eshani Karu elderly they must take precautions, the same precautions we all must take - social distance of six feet apart, wash our hands and wear a mask. When feeling under the weather, coughing and having an elevated temperature - stay home Dr Eshani Karu.
Update Covid-19: 13 September 2020 - Covid-19 Bakery TripI'm walking this morning in the small village, you know the town of Claremont that is a college town without the students right now. But the bankery on Yale had a line at 11:45 AM that was 10 people long and the bakery closed at noon. It was interesting to observe the signs of the times an"d store. The window signs read - no more than 4 customers in the store at a time. Another sign read, "Face Mask Required. No Mask, No Service, Thank You". A third sign read, "Upon entrance of this establishment, in response to the efforts to slow the spread of Covid-19, we ask that you cooperate with us. Please do not enter if you are experiencing the following symptoms of respiratory illness: 1. Fever, 2. Cough, 3. Shortness of Breath." Now when I got all the way through the maze of people and the only item left in the bakery was a lemon cookie. However, it was an amazing lemon cookie and well worth the wait in line. Social distance, wear a mask and always smile.
Update Covid-19: 27 August 2020Okay, so we have been talking about face masks since February 2020 and staying 6 feet away from strangers. Now on this past Tuesday, August 25, 2020 researchers from Oxford and MIT published a new system of social distancing in hopes that it will allow us to go about our daily lives in a much more calm fashion with a better understanding of preventing the spread of Covid-19 from person to person. The gist of the study is that the spread of viruses is based on 80 year old information and that it was a hypothesis and not a study that was responsible for the 6 foot rule. I'm going to suggest you Google - Oxford MIT Face Mask Traffic System - and read the article for yourself, but the one conclusion that they make and should give great comfort is that in a social setting, whether it is indoor or outdoors, the best way to protect yourself is to wear a mask AND when in doubt remain silent. When you are silent, the odds dramatically reduce the possibility of catching the coronavirus.
Update Covid-19: 12 August 2020In the past few weeks there have been several patients with chronic conditions who have been reluctant to visit their family doctor for fear of Covid-19 and the risk of getting the virus in their doctor's office. The doctor's office is a safe place to visit, as safe as any other out of home commercial property that one is going to visit, including the grocery store. While it is true that doctors often treat people with contagious conditions, that is not happening at the moment. All patients are counseled on the phone and if a patient is running a fever, they are treated separately and will not be exposed to anyone at the office because they will not be treated in the office. Patients with fever are referred to the emergency room for Covid-19 checking and only non-fever patients are seen at the doctor's office. Diabetes, high blood pressure, constipation are conditions that are not to be neglected. Call your doctor today to be treated.
Update Covid-19: 1 August 2020This week in "Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior" the authors tackled the subject of suicide. It is something that my patients have asked me about as a general subject from time to time as something to talk about with me, not that they themselves have been suicidal, but that there is a curiosity about the subject and this time in which we are living. Suicide is a subject that must be spoken about in public because more times than not the person thinking about it is doing so in silence and oftentimes in torment. Please do not judge someone who is having difficulty coping with their life circumstances. Also know that there is help always available. If you or someone you know is in need of someone to talk to there is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline operating 24/7 at 1-800-273-8255.
Update Covid-19: 14th of July 2020Today the New England Journal of Medicine published the findings of Moderna's phase 1 test that showed promise towards a vaccine for Covid-19. Earlier in the mon Pfizer had also published phase one information on their vaccine developoment. Both companies are now on their way to Phase Two testing with larger groups of patients. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases was asked to compare the 2 tests and he said in essence it was uncomparable because of their testing nature. He said it looked promising and let their activity in the real world speak for itself.
Update Covid-19: 12th of July 2020Yesterday, President of the United States Donald Trump wore a mask in public visting U.S. Soldiers at Walter Reed Medical Hospital. It was the first time that President Trump wore a mask in public and he was sending a message to each and every citizen of our country that is is imperative to wear a mask, at a minimum a cloth mask to cover our mouths and nasal passages to prevent the spread and infection of the Covid-19 virus. The World Health Organization and the U.S. Center for Disease Control are both in agreement that the best way to prevent the spread of the virus is by wearing a facial covering (mask) and social distancing. Social distancing is loosely defined as staying at least 6 feet (1 meter) apart from people we are not living with. When social distancing is impossible, it is imperative to wear a face mask to protect both you and the other person from spreading the disease.
